University of the Philippines Manila

The University of the Philippines Manila is coordinating centre for the SEA-ORCHID Project in the Philippines. The two sites for the collection of primary and secondary outcomes are the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) and the Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital (JFH). Both are located in Metro Manila within the Luzon province.

The Philippine General Hospital, celebrating its centennial year in 2007, is the national tertiary referral center and teaching hospital of University of the Philippines Manila (The Health Sciences Center).  It is the largest government university hospital and is administered by the UP System. PGH occupies 10 hectares of prime Manila real estate, 45 buildings, and 125,000 square meters of floor area; consists of 19 clinical departments distributed in the in- and outpatient sections, 1500 patient beds (1000 charity, 500 pay and special units).

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at PGH caters to 6,000 – 7,000 obstetric admissions annually. It is also the center of sub-specialty fellowship training in the Philippines with training programs on Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Maternal and Fetal Medicine, Trophoblastic Diseases, Obstetric and Gynecologic Ultrasound, Obstetric and Gynecologic Infections, and Urogynecology.

Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital

The Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital, a stone’s throw away from the Philippine General Hospital, was founded in 1920, starting out as a 6-bed “Maternity House.”  It is currently under the administration of the Department of Health (DOH), and now has a 700-bed capacity. It has been operating the only School of Midwifery of the DOH.  It has gained international recognition for maternal and child health services and family planning by the WHO (recognized as a collaborating center), UNICEF, USAID, UNFPA Family Health International, Georgetown University and University of Oxford.
